Full Disk Sun

Image Story

For most of my life the Sun was simply something to avoid looking at. Astrophotography completely changed that perspective.

This was my first successful full-disk solar image using my Dobsonian telescope and a solar filter. Seeing sunspots and surface structure emerge from thousands of stacked frames felt almost surreal. The Sun suddenly transformed from a bright featureless disk into a dynamic and ever-changing star.

What I like about solar imaging is how accessible it is. Unlike many deep-sky targets that require darkness and clear nights, the Sun can be observed during the day and changes from week to week. No two sessions are exactly the same.

This image was one of the first times I felt like I was truly photographing our nearest star rather than simply taking a picture of a bright object in the sky.

Processing Workflow

  1. 1 Converted source video to monochrome SER with PIPP.
  2. 2 Centered and quality analysed in PIPP.
  3. 3 Stacked best 75% of frames in AutoStakkert! 3.
  4. 4 Wavelet sharpening in RegiStax.
  5. 5 Final resizing and presentation adjustments.
